And finally... love on the rocks

A dream honeymoon turned into a nightmare when a couple checked into a ‘five-star’ EasyJet hotel in Rhodes, which turned out to be a noisy construction site.

Phil and Hannah Perkins from Newport, who married in May, paid £1,080 for what was meant to be a romantic getaway. Instead, they found trucks rumbling past sunbeds, workers installing balcony glass above swimmers, and constant drilling and banging.

Phil, 56, told The Mirror: “We didn’t really expect any problems with it being a five-star resort. When we got there, everything looked nice… After breakfast, I could hear this constant noise… It was constant drilling, banging… It was a proper building site… It ruined our honeymoon. We didn’t even take one honeymoon photograph.”

The couple’s swim-out room was also disappointing. Phil said: “The beds were really grimy and dirty… it needed a good clean-up, hence why we didn’t go in there.” Attempts to switch rooms were refused, and entertainment was almost non-existent.

After returning home, EasyJet initially offered £281 compensation, later raising it to £381. Phil said: “I just want to forget about it… My wife is really down about it; it’s like we haven’t had a honeymoon.”

An EasyJet Holidays spokesperson said: “We’re really sorry to hear that Mr Perkins was unhappy with his experience… Our team has since been back in touch… to apologise for his experience and offer a further refund, which was accepted.”
