King Charles is ensuring that bats are protected as construction begins on a new luxury wedding venue at Dumfries House, his historic Ayrshire estate.

Surveys found potential bat roosts in the area. While none were confirmed as active, bats were seen flying nearby. As a protected species in the UK, bats must not be harmed or disturbed, prompting East Ayrshire Council to require a species protection plan before approving the development.

The King’s Foundation has committed to installing bat boxes on the estate and educating construction workers on bat conservation. Planning officials approved the measures, which include seasonal precautions and on-site briefings, The Times reports.

The new venue will extend the east wing of Dumfries House, offering a ballroom-style space for up to 200 guests. It replaces a temporary marquee used since 2011 and aims to generate vital income for the estate’s operations, educational programmes, and local community initiatives.

King Charles led the £45 million purchase of Dumfries House in 2007, preserving its famed Chippendale furniture collection. The estate now employs over 150 people and plays a key role in regional regeneration efforts.
