And finally... womb at the inn

Charlotte Church has won planning permission to open a green wellness retreat - complete with a “womb room” - at a mansion in a Welsh valley.

The singer bought Rhydoldog House, which was once owned by the Laura Ashley family, while it was halfway through a renovation and has spent at least £500,000 on repairs and decoration so far.

Her proposal to turn it into a wellbeing retreat, where people could “connect with themselves and the natural world”, was initially opposed by the council over fears about increased traffic on narrow country lanes.

The retreat, called The Dreaming, is available to book for next year after she went on to win approval, The Times reports.

According to planning documents, the property will be “a system of non-hierarchical participatory democracy”, where guests can enjoy a “zero-emissions, off-grid location”. They can take part in so-called sound ceremonies, forest bathing and other “spiritual healing” practices.

The retreat includes a shower that Church has compared to a “very large and unusual-shaped vagina”, a room where the decor is designed to give visitors the feeling of being in the womb, and a “Mush room” with a fungi theme.

“It’s super classy and filled with beautiful neutral colours,” Church said of the Mush room. “It’s quite masculine with strong angular lines, vintage wall lights, brown leather chairs and large cacti. There are lots of illustrations of mushrooms on the wall.”

Church said on the venue’s website: “By honouring and connecting with nature we can regain our wildness and awaken spiritually. By spending time in woodland spaces we lower our cortisol levels and blood pressure, improve our mental health and even reduce the chances of coronary heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

“By slowing down and allowing ourselves to witness the rhythms and complexity of the natural world we can arrive at a peace that has become virtually impossible to achieve with the incessant and often exhausting pace of modern life.”

The highways department at Powys County Council had said that there was an “unacceptable risk” for drivers on the narrow roads and warned of traffic mayhem. The objections were withdrawn after Church agreed to widening some roads and adding parking spaces. Her renovation has been featured in the Discovery+ series Charlotte Church’s Dream Build.
