The contract, which was awarded in May this year, will see the international infrastructure group carry out the two-storey terminal expansion, delivering eight additional departure gates and boosting airport capacity. 

The work forms part of the initial phase of the biggest capital investment programme in Edinburgh Airport ever, with over £500 million to be invested over the course of a five-year period. 

Advancements in the project saw the infrastructure group deliver the installation of eight link bridges in a live airport environment. 

This most recent project comes after the group’s completion of a number of airport upgrades, which saw the expansion of operational infrastructure as well as facilities. 

These projects include the £8m Security Futures Project, in which security screening technology was installed, baggage hall expansion was delivered, and modernised fire station upgrades were completed. 

Balfour Beatty’s partnership with Edinburgh Airport has seen the group carry out more than £80 million of infrastructure enhancements since 2010.

This includes terminal and airfield enhancements, runway and taxiway rehabilitation works, airfield operational upgrades as well as runway decommissioning work to allow for future expansion.

The group’s work at Edinburgh Airport sits beside its wider portfolio, which includes terminal developments, security enhancement programmes and airport infrastructure projects within live airside and landside environments. 

It is anticipated that in the summer of next year, the SEPEX programme will be completed.
