Campaign launched to save former Possil Railway Station

One of the campaigners behind the successful legal protection of the historic Vogue Cinema in Glasgow is looking to save another beloved Possilpark landmark.
The building at 124 Balmore Road, once under serious threat of demolition, will now remain legally protected following a formal decision published by the Scottish Government’s Planning and Environmental Appeals Division (DPEA) earlier this year.
Local heritage advocate Andrew Moore is now turning his attention to the old Possil Railway Station.
Located at 479 Balmore Road, the category C-listed building dates back to the late 19th century. Built in 1897 by the Lanarkshire & Dunbartonshire Railway, this station once served as a vital link in Glasgow’s rail network. Its distinctive red brickwork, decorative timber gables, and terracotta detailing make it a rare surviving example of railway architecture from that era.
Today, the building sits in a state of dangerous neglect with its degrading roof, broken windows, and decaying structure.
Historic Environment Scotland is aware of its condition, but due to its Category C listing, it has limited protection, and no restoration plans currently exist.
Andrew Moore told SCN: “Although it’s already a Category C listed building, it’s been completely neglected for years. The roof has caved in, the site is unsecured, and if something isn’t done soon, we risk it becoming unsafe and permanently lost. I’m deeply worried that the authorities will eventually claim it’s ‘too far gone’ and move to demolish it… just like they tried with the Vogue.
“By signing this petition, you’ll be helping put pressure on Glasgow City Council to take urgent action, but I’m also hoping this will catch the attention of local councillors, heritage organisations, railway enthusiasts, and maybe even someone with the vision and funding to restore it for community use.
“A café/museum would bring life back to this overlooked part of our industrial heritage.”
Andrew’s petition calls for:
- For Glasgow City Council to take urgent steps to stabilise and protect the structure
- For heritage groups, railway enthusiasts, and investors to consider options for its reuse
- For anyone who cares about Glasgow’s past to show public support and keep the pressure on.
