Coatbridge pupils land apprenticeships with Mears
Apprenticeships with the housing and property services company Mears have been secured by pupils from Coatbridge’s St Andrew’s High School.
The seven pupils landed the apprenticeships after participating in a variety of employability and careers activities which aim to help young people get ready to start work.
Through regular involvement in careers events, the company has provided pupils with the chance to meet with employers, learn about various career pathways and attain a better understanding of the employment opportunities they can pursue.
A number of pupils also took part in Mears’ Talent Tasters programme, which gives hands-on experience as well as insight into working in the industry.
The programme supported participants in developing skills, confidence and an understanding of apprenticeship opportunities.
Councillor Michael McBride said: “This is a fantastic achievement for our young people and a reflection of their hard work and determination.”
“I would also like to recognise the commitment of our teaching staff, who continue to support pupils in developing the skills, confidence and ambition they need for life beyond school.”
McBride added: “Securing seven apprenticeships is something the whole school community can be proud of.
“It shows what can be achieved when motivated young people, dedicated staff and supportive employers work together to create meaningful opportunities.”
Gavin Hay from Mears said: It’s great to engage with a local school that encourages their pupils to consider apprenticeships and allow[s] pupils time to attend Mears talent taster programmes; when all these things come together, great things happen.”
Ava Walker said: “The talent taster programme with Mears helped me prepare for the recruitment process and increased my confidence.
“I got to find out what I was good at and what areas I had to work on.”
