Councillors approve 94 homes on former RAF land in Lewis

Western Isles councillors have given the green light to a 94‑home development on former RAF land at Melbost, on the edge of Stornoway Airport.

The proposal covers a phased programme of semi‑detached housing on the old RAF Stornoway site, together with a new access road from the A866 Stornoway–Point route, drainage infrastructure and a bus layby.

Planning permission already exists for 34 homes on part of the land, and construction on that element is underway. If the wider scheme proceeds, the smaller consent will be absorbed into the new, overarching approval.

Planning manager Morag Ferguson told councillors that six determinative issues had been identified during assessment of the application.

The project attracted six public representations and a formal objection from Sandwick Community Council. Concerns raised included the development representing a material departure from the local development plan, the site not being allocated for housing, other allocated sites around Stornoway remaining undeveloped, questions over whether the proposal meets current housing need, flood‑risk concerns, the suburban scale and design being unsuitable for the location, and alleged shortcomings in public consultation and planning procedures.

Ms Ferguson said officers were satisfied that both the consultation process and the planning assessment had followed all required procedures.
