Raised in Burnside, Leo first connected with the East Kilbride-based civil engineering consultancy at just 16, while in fourth year at Stonelaw High School. From the outset, he had a clear ambition to pursue a career in engineering and was determined to find the best route to achieve that goal.

In discussion with the DBA team, Leo explored the various pathways available into civil engineering and mapped out a development plan that would take him from school through further education and ultimately into university.

Following his initial work experience placement, Leo completed civil engineering modules during his fifth and sixth years at school, building a solid technical foundation before progressing to Glasgow Kelvin College, where, alongside working at DBA, he studied for an HNC in Civil Engineering.

His hard work and dedication were rewarded with an A grade, and he is now preparing for the next stage of his journey by enrolling on a Graduate Apprenticeship in Civil Engineering at the University of Strathclyde this September, while continuing to gain valuable practical experience as part of the DBA team.

Leo’s progression reflects DBA’s long-standing commitment to identifying and nurturing talent from an early stage and creating meaningful opportunities for young people who may wish to pursue alternatives to the traditional full-time university route.

Scott Macphail, director of civil engineering at DBA, said: “Leo is a fine example of what’s possible when young people are given the right opportunities and support. From his early time with us on work experience at the age of 16, it was clear he had both the interest and the attitude needed to succeed in civil engineering.

“What has impressed us most is the determination he’s shown throughout his journey. Together we explored several potential routes into the profession while he was still at school, and once Leo identified the pathway that suited him best, he committed to it completely. His focus and drive have been exceptional.

“We have been able to support his development at each stage - from school, through college, and now into university, and that continuity is of great value.

“It not only builds technical ability, but confidence, professionalism and a real understanding of how engineering works in practice.”

Leo said: “I first started at DBA on a work experience placement and am now about to start my Graduate Apprenticeship. I have found it very beneficial to apply what I have learned at college in a practical environment and look forward to continuing my studies at university whilst working. I am grateful to DBA for giving me the opportunity to do so.”

DBA has long championed graduate apprenticeships and alternative entry routes into engineering, recognising that some of the most capable future engineers benefit from combining academic study with hands-on experience from an early stage.

“You don’t have to follow a single, traditional path to achieve success. What matters is enthusiasm, commitment and a willingness to learn. Leo has demonstrated all three throughout his time with us, and we’re excited to see what he achieves next.”

For Leo, the apprenticeship route has provided the opportunity to continue progressing academically while gaining practical experience in a professional environment.

His journey demonstrates how a carefully planned pathway - supported by employers, educators and personal commitment - can help young people achieve their ambitions while building valuable industry experience along the way.
