Drum Property Group launches consultation for 7,000 new homes near Edinburgh

Drum Property Group has launched a consultation concerning plans to build 7,000 new homes in West Town, a 205-acre neighbourhood to the west of Edinburgh.

The firm has submitted a Proposal of Application Notices (PoANs) to the City of Edinburgh Council, located between Ingliston Park & Ride and the Gogar Roundabout.

The consultation outlines plans led by 7N Architects to deliver a “high-density mixed-use extension to the city, combining employment, commercial and community use within a 20-minute neighbourhood of 7,000 new homes”.

Unveiling the plans last year, Graeme Bone, group managing director of Drum, said: “Drum has a proven track record of delivering high quality large-scale communities across Scotland. This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to deliver the transformation of the west of Edinburgh whilst playing a critical role in Scotland’s economic recovery and ongoing development for decades to come.

“Our ambition for the area matches that of the proposed Edinburgh City Plan 2030. The amount of space on the site combined with its superb location allows for a natural extension for the west of Edinburgh, providing a new ‘20-minute neighbourhood’. As well as the close proximity to the airport, the site has direct access to some of the best public transport in Scotland. The tram line travels directly through the site and there are integrated rail, cycle and road connections creating a strategic gateway to the city.”

Built around the tram line, the development is billed as a ‘town centre’ development mixing flats, colonies and terraced housing for private rent, sale and senior living.

A new primary and potential secondary school are also included within the plans, as well as a new public park.

According to Drum Property Group, coordinating the master plan with neighbouring developments at Edinburgh Airport and Crosswinds, the net-zero carbon vision will serve nearby employment hubs at the Gyle and Edinburgh Park.

The consultation will be live through to 3 June ahead of a phase one planning application this autumn for the first tranche of 2,500 homes.
