The programme is supported by the Scottish and UK Governments via the Glasgow City Region (GCR) City Deal.

When it reaches completion late this year or early next year, the Civic Space will have a place for community events, markets, performances and gatherings, with a permanent canopy that will facilitate year-round outdoor use. The space will also have natural stone paving and bespoke seating. Planting, new trees and sustainable drainage will also be delivered as well as natural play features for children and enhanced pedestrian access. 

The Civic Space will be created on land next to Kirkintilloch Road – between St Matthew’s Church and the access road to Morrisons.

With support from SWECO and Pick Everard, work is being delivered by Luddon Construction. 

As the project moves forward, the footpath from the underpass underneath Kirkintilloch Road to the pedestrian crossing on the Morrisons access road will be shut at times. However, a route will be designated through the site for pedestrians, to tackle any disruption.

Councillor Gordan Low, leader of the council, said: “The aim is to provide a location at the heart of the town centre that can bring the community together, enhance the local environment, and support shops and businesses.”
