The investment forms part of the local authority’s annual Housing Capital Programme, covering spend on current housing stock, as well as new build projects.

The key focus of the programme is to ensure council homes are wind and watertight, providing safe and secure environments for tenants. This is demonstrated in significant investment in the roof and render programme; communal doors and door entry systems; and estates works.

Works are already underway now and covers a range of improvements. Some of the key projects include:

• More than £4m on roof and render works,
• £1.1m on new windows,
• Nearly £500,000 on upgraded and improved central heating systems,
• £950,000 invested in new kitchens,
• £350,000 on smoke detectors and environmental sensors, ensuring homes and safe and air quality is monitored,
• £454,000 on communal door entry systems, a key element of the Scottish Housing Quality Standard,
• Almost £500,000 on estates upgrades, to improve housing neighbourhoods and the environment for residents.

East Renfrewshire Council environment convener, Councillor Danny Devlin, said: “This is a significant investment in our council homes, and I’m delighted that works are already underway.
