Work on one of Edinburgh’s biggest-ever workspace developments featuring the largest electric car charging hub in Europe is expected to start later this year after it was given the go-ahead by councillors.

The Edinburgh Green project at Edinburgh Park will create more than 800,000 square feet of high-quality office space with a range of facilities, including a café/events space and a new public park.

Key to the sustainable development will be almost 800 electric vehicle (EV) charging points, which will be available for community use.

The development was approved by the council’s development management sub-committee by eight votes to two.

One office building on the site, Drummond House, has already been demolished, but another, the Younger Building, has been retained and refurbished. The plans also involve the construction of six new office buildings.

Edinburgh Green is being brought forward by Shelborn Asset Management, who purchased the site and existing buildings from the NatWest Group in 2021.

Shelborn director Brian Rabinowitz said he was delighted at the go-ahead. “Our proposals will see a state-of-the-art office campus built at Edinburgh Park,” he said.

7N Architects has described the project as “a new kind of workplace environment, focused on sustainability and the well-being of the occupants”.

The practice added: “The green campus of seven new office buildings is arranged around a richly landscaped parkland which is at the heart of the development. The park and buildings are designed to engage people with the landscape, with generous balconies and terraces and a new multi-use pavilion within the park which will be a focal point and gathering place for the campus and the wider neighbourhood.

“One of key principles of the masterplan is to maximise permeability and connectivity between the Edinburgh Green campus and the surrounding neighbourhood. Pedestrians and cyclists will be given priority through a network of green routes within the campus that connect to Edinburgh’s active travel and public transport infrastructure.

“The new office buildings are designed to achieve zero operational carbon by 2030, EPC A, BREEAM Excellent accreditation and WELL Gold standard and through sustainable and biophilic design. Edinburgh Green will create an environment which will enhance the health and well-being of those who work there and also the members of the surrounding community who will enjoy the new park.”
