Fife apprentice retains national crown
Casey Gardner
A Fife apprentice has been crowned Scotland’s top young painter and decorator for the second year in a row after seeing off competition from across the country at a national skills contest held on her home turf.
Casey Gardner, who is completing her apprenticeship with Persimmon Homes North Scotland, secured first place at the Scottish Association of Painting Craft Teachers (SAPCT) annual competition, held this year at Fife College.
The competition brought together the best painting and decorating apprentices from colleges across Scotland, with competitors put through a series of practical challenges designed to test their precision, technical ability and attention to detail.
Having lifted the trophy last year, Casey arrived at the competition with expectations high. However, the talented apprentice once again impressed judges with the quality of her work to retain the title on home soil.
The latest success continues a remarkable rise for the young apprentice, who joined Persimmon Homes North Scotland in 2024 and has quickly established herself as one of Scotland’s most promising talents in the trade.
Casey Gardner said: “To win the competition once was amazing, but to come back and win it again is something I never expected. The standard was extremely high and there were some incredibly talented apprentices taking part. Competing at Fife College in front of familiar faces made it even more special.
“I’ve learned so much during my apprenticeship and I’m grateful to everyone who has supported me along the way.”
William Smith, senior regional apprenticeship manager at Persimmon Homes, said: “Winning a national competition is a fantastic achievement. Retaining that title a year later is even more impressive.
“Casey has shown tremendous dedication since joining Persimmon and continues to set exceptionally high standards both at college and on site. She is a fantastic ambassador for apprenticeships and a real credit to herself and everyone who has supported her.”
