Trailblazing apprentice builds path for women in construction

Casey Gardner

Just one year into her apprenticeship, Casey Gardner has emerged as one of the most inspiring young figures in British construction — combining top-class craftsmanship with community pride, public engagement, and a passion for promoting careers in the trades.

The 19-year-old painter and decorator joined Persimmon Homes North Scotland in August 2024 and has quickly become a standout presence across the company’s developments in Fife, where she is also studying through Fife College. From day one, Casey has brought professionalism, creativity and an exceptional eye for detail to every project she touches, transforming show homes into vibrant, five-star spaces that reflect Persimmon’s commitment to quality.

In just 12 months, Casey has helped launch Persimmon’s apprenticeship partnership with Fife College, teaching cabinet secretary Jenny Gilruth MSP how to paint during a visit, and has supported high-profile engagements such as a site tour with Fife Council leader David Ross.

She also took it upon herself to revive a long-dormant public art project in Kirkcaldy, transforming the Links Market Horse Sculpture with intricate detail and bold colour. The newly restored sculpture has since become a local landmark on the town’s seafront. Her efforts were further recognised when she was invited to help officially open the 2025 Links Market, proudly unveiling the sculpture in front of thousands of residents alongside Fife Provost Jim Leishman.

Alongside her community engagement, Casey has continued to deliver exceptional work across live developments, consistently demonstrating the technical precision, discipline and flair that marks her out as a future leader in the industry. She also plays a key role in mentoring site visitors and new apprentices, helping to encourage more young people, especially women, to consider a career in construction.

Reflecting on her first year, Casey Gardner said: “It’s been an incredible year. I’ve learned so much, not just about painting and decorating, but about the impact you can make when you love what you do.

“I’m proud of the work I’ve done on site, especially the sculpture in Kirkcaldy, and I hope it shows other young people — especially girls — that there’s a place for them in this industry. Persimmon and Fife College have given me amazing support, and I’m excited to keep pushing myself further.”

William Smith, regional apprenticeship manager for Persimmon Homes North Scotland, added: “Casey’s had a phenomenal first year — she brings talent, energy and pride to everything she does. Her impact is being felt well beyond the job site, and she’s become a brilliant ambassador for apprenticeships and for the future of construction.

“We couldn’t be prouder of how far she’s come already, and we can’t wait to see what she achieves next.”
