The £2.9 million project, commissioned by Midlothian Council, involves reconfiguring and extending the existing classrooms and nursery area along with new toilets and ancillary rooms. The extension will consist of gym area, classrooms, cloakroom and additional plant room.

The work, which will be carried out in a live environment, also involves comprehensive mechanical and electrical upgrades and is scheduled for completion in June 2020.

The news comes following the company’s appointment to design and build Spateston Early Learning and Childcare Centre in Johnstone for Renfrewshire Council. Work on the £1.9m new build centre will provide modern facilities for 128 children. The design encourages outdoor play and will include covered outdoor learning spaces.

Fleming Buildings has committed to deliver a range of community benefits to both the immediate and wider area.

Recently the firm, also known for its expertise in timber frame, finished work on Ballantrae Primary School for South Ayrshire Council. The £2m project combined a steel frame structure with offsite timber infill.

The refurbishment provides three classrooms with hi-tech fittings, a combined gym/dining room, library/meeting room and various other facilities whilst the extension houses a large nursery area. A biomass heating system replaced the existing oil boiler and solar panels were installed, reducing the school’s carbon footprint.

Fleming Building’s continued work within education reflects the Scottish Government’s commitment to increase early learning and childcare provision, with new indoor and outdoor spaces being an integral part of this.

These main contractor commissions are in addition to a number of subcontracts in the sector to provide timber engineered structural frames for builds with a collective value of more than £1m throughout Scotland.
