Fourteen-year-old becomes youngest person to pass CPCS A17 Telescopic Handler qualification

Fourteen-year-old Johnny Waddell has made history by becoming the youngest person to pass the CPCS A17 Telescopic Handler qualification.

Johnny, from Linlithgow, successfully completed his CPCS testing at Sibbald Training, achieving a perfect 100% score in the theory test and receiving only a couple of minor faults in the practical assessment - an exceptional result for any candidate, let alone one so young.

His journey began on the family farm at just nine years old, where he first learned to operate a telehandler. That early hands-on experience, combined with formal training and testing, has now led to this nationally recognised achievement.

The CPCS A17 qualification is known across the construction and plant industries as a demanding standard, requiring in-depth knowledge of safety, machine controls, load handling, and best practice.

Johnny is the grandson of the owner of Riccarton Farm, a location that holds special significance for Sibbald Training. It was here, in 1973, that David G Sibbald, managing director and founder of Sibbald Training, had his very first job and learned to drive a JCB, an experience that helped lay the foundations for the business Sibbald Training is today.

Adding to the connection, the recently restored Sibbald pick-up truck was originally given to David from Riccarton Farm in the same year.

Johnny’s success reflects not only his dedication, technical understanding, and maturity but also the high standards upheld by his instructors and mentors throughout his training.

Looking ahead, Johnny will be applying to study Land Based Agricultural Engineering at Oatridge Agricultural College next year, taking the next steps toward a promising future in the industry.

His achievement stands as a powerful example of what can be accomplished through focus, enthusiasm, and the right support—regardless of age.
