A pipeline of potential projects for four city neighbourhoods has been developed that would make it easier for residents to walk, wheel and cycle, and have their day-to-day needs met within a short distance of their home.

The initiatives, which have been shaped by community input, are detailed in reports for the Cardonald to Mosspark, Knightswood to Anniesland, Lambhill to Milton and Ruchazie to Easterhouse areas, as part of Glasgow City Council’s work to develop Liveable Neighbourhoods throughout the city.

By rebalancing the way Glasgow’s streets are designed and used, the local authority is seeking to make them more people-friendly and better for socialising and improving commercial activity. This shift will also encourage active and sustainable transport to become the preferred choice for everyday, local journeys.

The potential projects identified for each of the four neighbourhoods have now been advanced to concept design. This progress follows previous local engagement and an additional round of community interaction toward the end of last year.

While securing new funding will be necessary to advance these initiatives further, this preliminary development work plays a vital role in proving their viability and strengthening future funding bids.

Developed designs for projects include enhanced public spaces and better active travel options along Paisley Road West which would benefit the communities of Halfway, Craigton, Penilee, and Rosshall. While proposals for Bellahouston would address the barrier posed by the M8 motorway and create more appealing connections to nearby services and communities to the north.

In Yoker, the formation of a Kelso Street Green Corridor would add greenspace and enhance connectivity, while the Netherton and Temple Green Routes project would redevelop community facilities at Netherton and improve connectivity to the surrounding area.

The ‘Heart of Milton’ initiative seeks to revitalise Liddesdale Square by enhancing sustainable and active transport links. This project has emerged as a significant local priority through community engagement and is considered essential for unlocking the next phase of development in the area. Additional proposals for this neighbourhood include safer junctions along Castlebay Street and an off-road active travel route west of Castlebay Road which would provide an accessible route to local schools further to our Active and Resilient School Zone strategy that emphasises broader neighbourhood connectivity.

And in the East End, proposals have been advanced for a new civic heart for Ruchazie, and a vibrant school street for Lochend Community Campus. Also identified as a key neighbourhood improvement is a Green Corridor in Gartloch that would enhance connectivity between Craigend, GESH, the Fort, and the surrounding communities.
