Hawick Flood Protection Scheme gains another major industry award

The Hawick Flood Protection Scheme has been recognised for its environmental and sustainability achievements at the British Construction & Infrastructure Awards.

The scheme triumphed in the Environmental Project Award category, which recognises the engineering projects delivering environmental improvements for local communities and regions through the mitigation of the impacts of extreme weather and climate change.

Shortlisted projects were scored on the extent to which the project is harmonious with its local environment and how much user benefit and social value has been delivered.

It also measured their commitment to using sustainable materials and processes throughout the project and how decision making to boost climate resilience and future proof the project against the effects of climate change was handled.

Feedback from the judges commended the flood protection project for its environmental excellence in considering environmental benefits at all stages of the project and reducing flood risk to the Hawick community.

This latest award win follows success in August at the Scottish Civil Engineering Awards, where the project scooped the coveted Project of the Year and Resilience Award. Earlier this year, the project and its various development partners were recognised at the Ground Engineering Awards in June winning the ‘UK Project with a Geotechnical Value of between £1m and £3m’ category.

Conor Price, project director for the Hawick Flood Protection Scheme, said: “The Hawick Flood Protection Scheme has been one of the most ambitious flood protection projects ever delivered in Scotland and this award win underlines the project team’s commitment to creating infrastructure that meets urgent climate resilience needs while simultaneously enhancing the natural surroundings.

“Through every phase of the project our goal has been to deliver long-term community benefits by adding environmental and social value. Whether it’s the flooding infrastructure now straddling the River Teviot which safeguards nearly 1000 homes or the 7km of active travel network that offers the people of Hawick renewed connection with their local environment, I think this has clearly been achieved.”
