Jones Bros charts progress for construction on south west wind farm
The Sanquhar II Wind Farm site team
The civil engineering firm Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK has helped Sanquhar II Wind Farm hit a major milestone for construction, with 44 turbine foundations having been completed.
The firm serves as the principal contractor for the £400 million development that will have the capacity to power over 335,000 homes per annum.
Spanning Dumfries and Galloway as well as East Ayrshire, the development will be the UK’s fourth largest wind farm once it starts operating.
With support from Cambrian Services, the civil engineering firm completed the pours, with all concrete produced on site.
This helped cut vehicle movements, fuel usage, and associated emissions.
The firm’s senior contracts manager David Nicolson said: “The completion of all 44 turbine foundations, on time and on budget, marks the culmination of a substantial programme of civil engineering works.
“Delivering this successfully has depended on the expertise and commitment of our site teams, alongside effective planning and coordination throughout the construction process.”
Nicolson added: “Our on-site batching has helped us manage the demands of the foundation pours, improving efficiency and reducing vehicle movements associated with concrete deliveries.”
The foundations have laid the groundwork for the installation of the most powerful onshore wind turbine in the UK.
The three-bladed V162-6.2MW EnVentus model, which is the only one of its kind currently installed in the UK, is made to harness the high wind speeds in Southern Scotland.
The first power from Sanquhar II is anticipated to arrive late this year.
Rod Wood MBE, managing director of CWP Energy, said: “With 44 turbine foundations now completed, it is testament to the hard work, expertise, and collaboration of everyone involved.”
Jones Bros, which was founded in the late 1950’s owns one of the largest plant fleets in the UK and employs roughly 570 people.
At present, the firm is working on contracts in different sectors such as highways, flood and marine defence, reservoirs, waste management, and renewable energy in the UK.
The firm has an apprenticeship scheme, which has produced a large amount of its present staff.
Several of its senior managers began as apprentices or trainees. Over the years, hundreds of apprentices have been recruited by the firm.
