Just a Minute with Gary Gray

Gary Gray
Scottish Construction Now spends 60 seconds with Gary Gray, general manager at Muir Timber Systems.
How did you get started in the industry?
I started as a joiners mate, working hands-on in the trade for 20 years, which gave me a solid foundation in construction. Over time, my interest in timber systems grew, and I developed a deeper understanding of their design, efficiency, and sustainability. This naturally led me into the industry, where I’ve been able to combine my practical skills with strategic management. I’ve been with Muir Timber Systems for 17 years, overseeing projects that bring precision and innovation to timber construction.
What has been your biggest professional achievement?
Becoming the General Manager of Muir Timber Systems is my proudest professional achievement. Leading the team and overseeing operations allows me to drive efficiency, improve processes, and contribute to the company’s ongoing success. It’s incredibly rewarding to see projects come together seamlessly, knowing that our work plays a vital role in the industry. The role has definitely challenged me to grow both professionally and personally.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
“Never give in.” This simple yet powerful advice has shaped my approach to challenges throughout my career. In an industry where problem-solving and resilience are key, perseverance has helped me navigate tough situations, adapt to change, and keep pushing forward. Whether it’s overcoming setbacks on a project or managing unexpected hurdles, having the determination to find solutions and keep moving has been invaluable to me.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I love the sense of accomplishment that comes with seeing everything come together each week. Knowing that every stage—from processing to manufacturing and delivery—has run smoothly is incredibly rewarding. It’s a fast-paced industry, and there’s always a challenge to tackle, but when everything aligns as planned, it’s a great feeling. Seeing the tangible results of our work and the impact it has on projects makes all the effort worthwhile.
And the least?
The opposite—when things don’t run smoothly. Any delays or disruptions can be frustrating, but they’re part of the industry, and problem-solving is key.
What has been your favourite project to work on, and why?
The Muir Homes Dalgety Bay flats stand out as my favourite project. It was a fast-paced, efficient build where everything fell into place seamlessly. The combination of strong teamwork, precision in manufacturing, and smooth on-site execution made it a particularly rewarding experience. Seeing the finished development come together so efficiently reinforced the value of well-planned timber systems and highlighted what can be achieved when everything runs at its best.
Who or what inspires you most in your role?
John Muir, founder and executive chairman of Muir Group, is a huge inspiration to me. Even at 87, he continues to lead with the same passion, drive, and determination as someone just starting out. His unwavering commitment to the industry and his ability to adapt and push forward, no matter the challenge, are qualities I deeply admire. His leadership and work ethic set a standard that I strive to embody in my own career.
Is there a project you wish you had been involved in?
I would have loved to have been involved in the Deer Park flats project. The unique design, particularly the special turrets, gives the development real character and sets it apart architecturally. It’s a stunning build that showcases attention to detail and craftsmanship, and being part of its manufacturing process would have been a fantastic experience.
Projects with distinctive features like this highlight the versatility and potential of timber systems, making them especially exciting to work on.
What have been the biggest challenges for your organisation since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic?
One of the biggest challenges for our organisation since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic has been maintaining a consistent workforce while ensuring a steady flow of clients. The uncertainty surrounding the pandemic created disruptions in staffing and project timelines, making it difficult to predict demand and resource needs. Despite these challenges, we’ve worked hard to adapt and remain flexible, prioritising communication with both our clients and team members to keep projects moving forward smoothly.
Has anything changed for the better in the industry?
While technology and efficiency continue to improve incrementally, core challenges—such as planning delays and maintaining a skilled workforce—persist. However, I’m optimistic that through ongoing collaboration, we can drive meaningful progress in these areas.
What are your hobbies and interests?
I enjoy hill walking and spending time with my grandchildren. It’s a great way to recharge and enjoy the simple things, whether it’s exploring new trails or making memories with family. Both activities help me maintain a healthy work-life balance.
What is your favourite holiday destination?
Florida — it’s always been a favourite getaway spot for me.
How do you stay up to date with industry news?
I primarily stay updated through LinkedIn, which has proven to be an invaluable platform for keeping track of industry trends, news, and opportunities, especially within the construction and timber sectors. It provides a steady stream of shared articles from colleagues and industry experts, ensuring I’m informed about the latest developments. It’s also an excellent space to network, exchange insights, and actively participate in industry discussions to stay current.
