Just a Minute with Will Payne

Will Payne

Akela Ground Engineering managing director Will Payne is the next participant in SCN’s Just a Minute feature.

How did you get started in the industry?

I actually found my way into ground engineering by accident. While studying Business and Finance at college, I took a job with a local ground engineering firm to help fund my studies. They were subcontracting for Roger Bullivant Ltd, and when a full-time role opened up in their accounts department, I applied and got it.

Although I quickly realised finance wasn’t my calling, I’d built a strong relationship with Roger himself. He gave me the opportunity to move into ground engineering through an apprenticeship, while I studied Civil Engineering part-time at Derby University. That chance set me on a path that’s taken me across the UK and even abroad, working with major firms like Aarsleff and Van Elle before returning to Roger Bullivant in 2006. It’s been a hands-on journey ever since.

Biggest professional achievement:

Launching Akela’s ABeam system in early 2024 has been a real milestone. It’s a fully precast foundation beam with a mechanical joint that enables installation in hours, rather than days, and since 2023, it has already contributed to numerous successful projects across the United Kingdom. Seeing it go from concept to NHBC-approved product, with major housebuilders like Bellway and AS Homes praising its impact, has been incredibly rewarding. We were also delighted to be shortlisted in the Equipment Innovation category at this year’s Ground Engineering Awards. ABeam is not just about innovation though, it’s about helping solve real challenges in housing delivery.

Best advice you received:

“Don’t be afraid to ask questions.” Early in my career, I worked with people who were generous with their time and knowledge. That mindset helped me learn quickly and build confidence. It’s something I try to pass on, especially in an industry where experience counts for so much.

What is the most important part of the industry?

Adaptability. Ground conditions, regulations and client needs are constantly changing. The companies that thrive are the ones that stay agile, invest in innovation and build strong relationships. That’s why Akela Group’s integrated approach is so valuable to clients.

What do you like most about your job?

Problem-solving. Every site is different and ground engineering often throws up unexpected challenges. Whether it’s hard strata, obstructions or tight deadlines, finding the right solution and seeing it work is really satisfying. I also enjoy mentoring and building teams. It’s a family trade for me as my son, father-in-law and brothers-in-law all work in piling. Helping others grow in the industry feels personal.

And the least?

Weather delays. They’re a constant frustration in construction, especially when working with insitu concrete. That’s one reason we developed ABeam, to eliminate weather dependency and keep projects moving regardless of conditions.

What would you most like to change in housing/construction?

I’d like to see faster adoption of innovative systems. There’s still a tendency to stick with traditional methods, even when better solutions exist. The housing emergency is not going away, only intensifying, so we need to embrace technologies that speed up delivery, reduce costs and improve sustainability.

ABeam is a good example. It’s proven to cut foundation install times by up to 60%, and it’s totally weather-independent. That kind of efficiency should be the norm, not the exception.

Which newsletters/ bulletins do you receive?

I like to read the usual, Natm, Construction Enquirer and Ground Engineering Magazine

How would you change Scottish Construction Now?

Nothing springs to mind. Scottish Construction Now is definitely on top of what’s happening across the sector in Scotland. Things are changing all the time though so it will continue to be important for the media to monitor and use its platform to champion innovation across the construction industry.

Do you read a daily newspaper?

I tend to read industry publications and digital news more than print. Construction News, Scottish Construction Now and Ground Engineering magazine are regular reads. I also keep an eye on housing policy updates and economic forecasts as they help shape our strategic decisions.

Which social media sites do you use and which do you find the most useful?

LinkedIn is by far the most useful. It’s a great platform for sharing updates, connecting with clients and keeping up with industry trends. We’ve used it to demonstrate the investment we’re making in our work, as well as showcasing ABeam’s rollout. It has definitely helped to spark conversations with developers across the UK and Ireland.
