Lidl reveals plans for new Scottish distribution centre

LidlSupermarket chain Lidl is to build a brand new regional distribution centre (RDC) at Eurocentral in North Lanarkshire as part of its ongoing expansion ambitions within the UK.

The German company has exchanged contracts with Scottish Enterprise to secure the new site.

The centre, which will be located on Coddington Crescent, represents a massive multi-million pound investment in the local area. Lidl has committed to building a sustainable 58,000m² RDC on a 50 acre site, with plans to create up to 100 new jobs.

The building will be designed and constructed to meet the demanding BREEAM benchmark of ‘very good’, which demonstrates its high energy and water efficiency, its low impact on the environment and its comfort and accessibility for the building occupants.

The Lanarkshire-based RDC will replace Lidl’s existing warehouse in Livingston and is necessary to accommodate the scale of future operations within the region as Lidl continues with its ambitious expansion plans in the UK.

Lidl employees at the current RDC have been assured that all existing job roles will be retained at the new premises.

Ross Millar, managing director for Lidl in Scotland, said: “We are delighted to have exchanged contracts for our new RDC at Eurocentral, which marks another milestone in our ambitious expansion programme. We’ve seen incredible demand for Lidl stores across the country and look forward to servicing our existing 91 stores and future new stores from our new distribution hub, allowing us to continue offering our customers the best quality products at the lowest possible prices.

“We are firmly committed to helping boost the local economy by creating new jobs through the construction of the new RDC. The team are very much looking forward to now preparing and submitting the planning application. If approved we would hope to commence building in 2017.”

The expansion of Lidl’s Scottish warehouse is the latest development in the retailer’s plans to grow and strengthen its infrastructure, following announcements earlier in the year to open new RDCs in Bristol, Exeter, Wednesbury and Southampton.

In June the firm announced a £50 million investment in its Scottish property portfolio over the next 12 months.
