New signs are now up at Shawfair to welcome visitors and celebrate the existing community and put one of Scotland’s new towns on the map.

The designs are a mixture of directional and informational signs and include messages to promote the town’s closeness to city life in Edinburgh, whilst promoting the country living available at Shawfair.

Shawfair LLP, the master planners behind the new town in Midlothian, commissioned the new signs to help demonstrate a sense of arrival and also to help visitors to navigate around the developing town and surrounding area. The signs provide welcome messages at key points at key junctions and entry points from the bypass and main roads into the town centre.

Shawfair currently has 500 homes sold and a further 740 in development with a pipeline of another 1000 homes. The new town will have up to 4000 homes and a town centre with schools, community facilities, offices and retail space. The new signs support the development by creating a sense of place. The graphics and phrases used also give a reminder of what makes Shawfair special including one dedicated to the communities in and around Shawfair and includes the names of key local community organisations.

The signage is a significant step demonstrating the arrival of one of Scotland’s newest towns. The signs communicate the benefits of living in Shawfair, such as it offers both city and country living on residents’ doorsteps. The messages communicate its proximity to Edinburgh by train - just 15 minutes south of the city. And it is home to hundreds of acres of green space, cycle lanes, as well as close proximity to the coast at Portobello.

The sign locations include locations of The Sheriff Hall roundabout towards Newton village. There are also signs at the business park at Shawfair Park and prominent sites into Millerhill and Danderhall.

Nick Waugh, director, Shawfair LLP, said: “The signs welcome visitors to Shawfair and provide even greater orientation to the people who have already chosen to call Shawfair home. Our intention is that they will illustrate the positive reasons to move to Shawfair, such as school options, retail spaces and the short travel times to Edinburgh and Dalkeith, and create a sense of place.”
