Cara MacDougall has received the tools she needs to start her construction career after she met with Clackmannanshire Council leader Ellen Forson and local MSP Keith Brown at Persimmon Homes’ Willowfields development in Sauchie, where they gave her the tools. 

MacDougall, who used to attend Alloa Academy, recently joined Persimmon Homes after leaving school to enter the career pathway of joinery. 

MacDougall is combining on-site experience at Willowfields and other Persimmon developments together with her studies at Forth Valley College. 

The 17-year-old previously completed a pre-apprenticeship joinery course at the college.

Persimmon Homes gives its apprentices the tools and personal protective equipment they require for their roles for free. 

Ellen Forson and Keith Brown visited Willowfields to meet MacDougall, learn about her apprenticeship and see the work she is delivering as she hones her skills on site.

Councillor Ellen Forson, leader of Clackmannanshire Council, said: “Cara is a fantastic example of a young person pursuing her ambitions and taking advantage of the opportunities available through apprenticeships.

“I hope her success will inspire other young women across Clackmannanshire to consider careers in construction and other traditionally male-dominated industries.”

Keith Brown MSP said: “Combining practical experience on site with studies at Forth Valley College provides an excellent foundation for a rewarding career. 

“Persimmon’s commitment to supplying apprentices with their tools and protective equipment is also very welcome, helping to ensure that cost is not a barrier for young people entering the industry.”

MacDougall said: “I’m really enjoying my apprenticeship and learning new skills every day.

“It was great to meet Ellen and Keith and to receive my tools.”

MacDougall added: “Having everything I need to get started makes a big difference and I’m looking forward to continuing my training and building my career in joinery.”
