Persimmon leads mental health drive across Scottish sites

Persimmon Homes North Scotland is taking bold action to tackle mental health stigma on construction sites across the region, bringing Andy’s Man Club to 11 of its developments from Aberdeenshire to Alloa.
The initiative forms part of the company’s Wellbeing Wednesday programme, giving employees and subcontractors access to support, conversation, and practical resources to protect their mental wellbeing.
Food trucks and pop-up sessions provide a relaxed environment where staff can connect with trained volunteers from Andy’s Man Club, a UK-wide men’s suicide prevention charity that offers free peer-to-peer support both in-person and online. The charity’s mission is to end the stigma surrounding men’s mental health and help men through the power of conversation.
The latest session took place at Persimmon Homes’ Willowfields development in Sauchie, where The Stirling Pizza Company provided food, helping create a welcoming and informal space that encouraged open conversation among site teams.
The initiative is part of a wider push to address the alarming mental health challenges facing construction workers in the UK. Research by social media company ‘On The Tools’ shows that 73% of the UK’s 2.1 million construction workers have been affected by mental illness.

Over the last decade, 7,000 workers have taken their own lives, with construction employees three to four times more likely than the general population to die by suicide.
Georgina Smith, construction coordinator at Persimmon Homes North Scotland, said: “Construction is a rewarding industry, but we know it comes with pressures that can take a serious toll on mental health.
“Wellbeing Wednesday and our partnership with Andy’s Man Club are about giving people space to talk, listen, and support one another.
“Every conversation matters, and we hope these sessions will help prevent tragedy and build a culture of openness across our sites.”
Mark Inglis, Andy’s Man Club area lead for north east Scotland, added: “We really enjoyed getting on site and having the chance to speak with the team. What stood out most were the open and honest conversations that followed the presentation — proper, real chats with men who felt able to open up, even just a little, over a slice of pizza.
“That’s what it’s all about for us: creating a space where men feel comfortable enough to talk.”
