Perth and Kinross Council marks first anniversary of Scott Street fire
The leader of Perth and Kinross Council has thanked residents and businesses for their support as the city recovered from a devastating city centre fire one year ago.
One man died in the blaze at 41 Scott Street on 14 June, 2025, while a young girl and a firefighter were also injured.
The tenement and Royal Bar on the ground floor had to be demolished after the building was badly damaged in the blaze.
Neighbouring properties also had to be evacuated because of structural damage, with 55 households rehoused in the immediate aftermath of the fire.
Marking the first anniversary of the blaze, council leader Councillor Eric Drysdale said: “For many people, today will be incredibly difficult. Even though a lot has changed since 14 June last year, we know that the memories of that day are still very real and very painful and we are thinking of all those affected.
“The damage to 41 Scott Street was so severe that demolition had to begin straight away, with specialist contractors brought in. At the same time, we worked to make sure residents in the building, and in neighbouring properties, had somewhere safe to stay when they couldn’t return home.
“A year on, it’s positive that people in the surrounding buildings have now been able to move back home. Those who lived at 41 Scott Street are now settled in accommodation elsewhere but many are still dealing with the financial fallout.”
Councillor Drysdale also thanks residents and businesses who experienced disruption caused by the fire and subsequent road closures. He added: “Many of the local businesses affected have also been able to reopen, and the roads around Scott Street are back in use. I’d like to thank everyone for their patience while work to reinstate the roads and pavements was completed.
“I’d also like to thank everyone who rallied round in the aftermath of the fire. Whether it was hotels providing emergency accommodation or the generous people who donated to money and goods to help those affected showed Perth and Kinross at its very best.”
Councillor Drysdale added plans for the site at 41 Scott Street have still not been finalised due to the complex issues surrounding insurance and ownership of the former properties.
