Plan to replace Glasgow bar with student housing development

Old College Bar student planProposals have been submitted to demolish the Old College Bar in Glasgow for a 12-storey student flat development.

Under the plans from developer Structured House, the High Street establishment will be removed and replaced with a 426-bed complex for university students in the area.

Said to be the oldest pub in Glasgow, the Old College Bar dates back to the early 1800s, although the foundations are older.

Historian Diana Connell submitted a note on the planning application on January 11 stating that the building’s sub structure “probably dates to about 1470”.

Despite its history, the Old College Bar remains unlisted - although the planning application, submitted in December, notes that it is within a conservation area.

Developers describe the bar and surrounding buildings as “detrimental to surroundings visually, economically and in urban design terms” and say their towering student complex will “enhance the existing character of the conservation area”.
