Plans for 40 new homes in Forfar stalled by Angus Council

Plans to build more than 40 new homes on the site of the former Forfar Academy have been pushed back to “later years” by Angus Council.

The project is one of several to feature in the council’s strategic housing programme for the next five years.

Almost £3 million of grant funding has been allocated for the project. However, Angus Council has stated that there are no firm plans in place for the homes to be constructed.

The former secondary school was located on Taylor Street for over fifty years. It was knocked down in 2017 following the completion of the £39m Forfar Community Campus. A new early years centre was also constructed on part of the old academy site.

In 2022, council officials brought forward plans to use the remainder of the ground for housing, the Courier reports.

A council spokesperson said: “While a final design has yet to be agreed, current projections indicate around 43 units.”

The mix of social rent and shared equity homes would cost an estimated £8.9m.

The spokesperson added: “This development is scheduled to feature in the later years of our approved Strategic Housing Investment Plan 2025-2030.”

A £2.8m funding allocation for 2029/30 is included in the council plan.
