Plans for new homes near Dundee school approved

Plans to build 31 new affordable homes near Kingspark School in Dundee have been approved by Dundee City Council.

The council’s planning committee met on Monday to discuss the application submitted by Abertay Housing Association.

The development will be built on land close to the additional needs school and will comprise a mix of two and three-bedroom semi-detached houses and two-bedroom flats.

Designed by Wellwood Leslie Architects, the proposal also includes a new junction from Clepington Road.

The site has previously been used for agricultural and limited residential use, and most recently as playing fields for St John’s RC High School. The land is located between Clepington Road in the north and Kingspark to the south.

A report on the application drafted by council officers revealed 57 objections had been submitted against the plans.

At the committee meeting, before which council planners had recommended the application for approval, members heard several deputations calling for them to refuse planning permission.

However, a representative of the applicants argued the development would help address the “housing emergency” facing Dundee. He added that Abertay had a “very good” relationship with Kingspark and the privacy of the school would be respected if the development was approved, the Courier reports.

A council planning officer also reassured council leader Mark Flynn that the proposed Clepington Road junction had been fully assessed and no objections raised.
