Plans lodged to restore Glasgow office to original use as hotel
A B-listed empty office building in Glasgow city centre could be restored back to use as a 149-bed hotel with a three-storey extension.
Faulkner Browns Architects are aiming to convert 250 St Vincent Street into Scotland’s first Meliá Innside hotel.
The building, on the corner with Douglas Street, would include a restaurant and bar plus conference and wedding facilities and a fitness suite.
The development would entail demolition of a reinforced concrete ‘mansard’ roof to allow the addition of up to three additional floors of accommodation.
A statement submitted to Glasgow City Council explained: “The redevelopment will bring a longstanding vacant office building back into beneficial use, reinstating the grandeur of the building and returning it to its original use.
“The Innside brand operates as four and five-star hotels marketed at the travelling professional with high-quality, contemporary and playful interiors providing a welcoming experience for both guests and visitors alike.
“A key component of the development is the front-of-house offering which is open to both the public and hotel residents, creating a vibrant new destination and bringing activation to this part of Blythswood Hill.
“The development provides significant conservation gain through the careful repair and conservation of the historic façades, remodelling of the internal spaces and reinstating a number of external features which had been lost as part of a 1980s redevelopment which involved the demolition of the majority of the building where the elevations to St Vincent Street and Douglas Street only were retained.”
