The Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) is holding its annual conference, RIAS Live, at Glasgow City Chambers today, with SCN’s commercial director Raymond Carr sharing insights from the morning.

The one-day event is sold out and runs under the theme “Renewal By Design”. Delegates were welcomed by Lord Provost Jacqueline McLaren, RIAS president Libby Heathcote and Shirley-Anne Somerville MSP, before the first of four sessions got under way.

The morning covered economy and leadership, with journalist Gabriella Bennett discussing how to build a city and Lucie Murray of ING Media looking at Glasgow’s international image. A second session turned to education and culture, with Susan Jayne Thams Carruth of GXN and Line Hellum of Nordic Office of Architecture, asking what makes a home.

After lunch, the focus shifts to purpose and place. John Dales of Urban Movement will speak on active public realm, followed by Martyn Evans of Landsec on public spaces and urban planning. The final session brings in Cllr Ruairi Kelly of Glasgow City Council and Jay Morton of Bell Phillips Architects, who will look at crafting urban identities.

Panel discussions chaired by Raffaele Esposito, Romain Charlet of the GIA, Tamsie Thomson and RIAS Past President Karen Anderson give delegates a chance to put questions to speakers throughout the day.

The event also explores wider themes including heritage, transport and housing, and remains a key date in the Scottish architecture calendar.

More to follow next week.
