Residents to have their say on development plans for Dumfries site

Residents in Lochside are being encouraged to have their say on regeneration plans for land previously occupied by a former high school.

Wheatley Homes South and Dumfries and Galloway Council are hosting an information event next Wednesday on its proposals to develop the site of the former Maxwelltown High School.

The drop-in event will give residents the chance to hear more about the proposals and speak with staff and external partners about the proposals.

This development forms part of the £130 million transformation of Lochside, which will see existing homes upgraded, new energy-efficient homes built, better connectivity, enhanced active travel routes and more welcoming green space.

The views of local residents and stakeholders are important in shaping the development of the vacant land. As part of the wider Lochside regeneration, around 1500 people shared their views, helping to shape the transformation of the area and ensure it meets the needs of the local community.

Alex Lamb, managing director of Wheatley Homes South, said: “It’s important the community’s voice is heard at every stage of the process, as the community’s views and feedback will directly shape and influence the proposals for this land.”

“Along with our partners at Dumfries and Galloway Council, we have been engaging with tenants and residents in Lochside to get views on what the regeneration will look like. The redevelopment of the land that was previously home to Maxwelltown High School forms a key part of the wider regeneration.

“The event in April is an opportunity for residents to meet staff and find out more about the development of this part of Lochside. We hope to see as many people as possible attend, so they can hear more about our vision for the area.”

Stuart McMillan, head of Dumfries and Galloway Council’s economy and environment service, said: “The regeneration of Lochside is about creating a place that works for the people who live there now and for future generations.

“The former Maxwelltown High School site plays an important role in that vision, and it’s vital that local residents have the opportunity to help shape what happens next.

“This information event is a chance for the community to find out more about the proposals, ask questions and share their views. We would encourage anyone with an interest in the area to come along and take part.”

The event will be held in the Atrium at the North West Community Campus, Alloway Road, Dumfries on Wednesday 15 April between 4pm and 7pm.
