Environmental consultancy LUC has appointed former university vice-chancellor Sir Nigel Carrington as its independent trustee to head the consultancy’s new governance structure.
Sir Nigel began his career at Baker McKenzie, where he became managing partner and European chairman, before serving as managing director of McLaren Group. From 2008 to 2021, he served as vice-chancellor of the University of the Arts London.
With a passion for art, architecture, and learning, Sir Nigel has held several prominent roles across a wide range of charities and organisations, including LAMDA, The Art Fund, Creative UK, Universities UK and Crisis. In 2019 he was knighted for his contribution to higher education and the creative industries.
“We’re genuinely delighted that Sir Nigel joins us as Independent Trustee,” said Rob Booth, chief executive at LUC. “Having led or chaired over a dozen socially focussed organisations, his experience will prove invaluable in heading our new governance structure.”
“When LUC was founded 60 years ago, it was intended to bring together a diverse range of perspectives and disciplines to solve complex and shared challenges. Sir Nigel’s experience at the intersection between science, art and business perfectly embodies this ethos,” Booth added.
As independent trustee, Sir Nigel will both chair LUC’s trustee board and drive accountability of LUC’s company board, with the aim of assuring LUC’s long-term success for both current and future stakeholders and employees.
His appointment completes LUC’s new governance structure in its 60th year, which saw the employee-owned business launch trust and management boards to fully empower its employees to shape the company’s future.
“For 60 years, LUC has played a crucial part in managing the many unique opportunities, and challenges, that our diverse environment and landscape poses,” said Sir Nigel Carrington. “As a fully independent employee-owned business, LUC’s Trustee Board plays a critical role in representing staff interests. I’m honoured to be joining an organisation whose people-centred, impact-driven values align with my own.”
