SSEN Transmission submits proposals to Ofgem for advancing clean power projects

The UK energy regulator, Ofgem, has been given proposals by SSEN Transmission to advance three clean power projects in Perthshire and the Highlands.

One of the projects is the Coupar Angus 2 132kV substation, which is located in the Coupar Angus area, Perth and Kinross.

Another one of the projects is the Earba Pumped storage hydro connection, which is located in the Central Highlands, west of Dalwhinnie.

The other project is the Coire Mashie 400kV substation, with the 400kV referring to Coire Mashie’s operating voltage, rather than its capacity in megawatts. The project is located between Laggan and Dalwhinnie.

The regulator has been asked by SSEN Transmission to confirm that the three electricity transmission projects can proceed via the Load Re-opener process and get funding for the next stage of development.

SSEN Transmission is seeking an agreement as to how the projects should be assessed.

It is also looking for funding to pave the way for early development work such as design, environmental assessment, land, planning and stakeholder engagement.

In the regulatory process, the submissions are an early step made. Should they receive approval, the submissions would enable more development, design, environmental and planning work to proceed in the run-up to future funding decisions being made.

The projects would help link more renewable generation and storage in the north of Scotland.
