£300,000 revamp gets underway at Leven Bus Station

Bus services at Leven Bus Station will soon temporarily move to the nearby Promenade Car Park as part of a £300,000 upgrade.

The current concourse surface at Leven Bus Station has significantly deteriorated since it was installed, with areas of broken surfacing, failing monoblock and displaced kerbs.

While these defects have been managed through ongoing maintenance and interim repairs, the condition of the concourse has now reached a point where a more permanent solution is required to maintain passenger safety and accessibility standards.

With that in mind, Fife Council is carrying out a complete resurfacing of the concourse, creating a safer, more accessible and more comfortable environment for passengers.

The project is being delivered using funding from Transport Scotland’s Bus Infrastructure Fund and is expected to take approximately five weeks.

During construction, a temporary bus station will operate from the Promenade Car Park, a short distance from the existing bus station.

Temporary bus stances will be clearly signposted, and advance warning notices will be in place both at the bus station and along the Promenade.

Work to accommodate the temporary switch to the Promenade Car Park will begin on Monday, February 9, and bus services are expected to begin operating from the Promenade Car Park on Thursday, February 12.

Passengers are advised to allow a little extra time during the initial period of relocation and to follow on‑site signage for the temporary bus stances.

Councillor Alistair Suttie, convener of Levenmouth Area Committee, said: “This investment in Leven Bus Station is about making sure passengers have a safe, accessible and welcoming facility that meets modern standards.

“While the temporary relocation to the Promenade car park may cause some short‑term inconvenience, it’s essential work that will deliver long‑term benefits for bus users and support the wider regeneration of the town.

“I’d encourage passengers to bear with us while these important improvements are carried out.”

The concourse upgrade will support the wider regeneration of Leven Town Centre, providing a more welcoming arrival point for residents and visitors.

The refurbishment will replace the existing concourse with Hardicrete, a fast‑curing, seamless surface that combines the flexibility of asphalt with the strength of concrete and is specifically designed to withstand the demands of bus station environments.

As part of the improvements, stance 9 will be extended to better accommodate larger express buses, improving access for passengers with mobility needs. The extended stance will be future‑proofed to allow space for potential electric bus charging infrastructure.

The project will also deliver new dropped kerbs, tactile paving and safety guard rails, enhancing accessibility and safety for all users.

Once the refurbishment has been completed, bus services will switch back to Leven Bus Station.
