Ten flats planned in East Lothian town for people with additional support needs

A new housing development for people with additional support needs (ASN) could be created in Tranent, with proposals for ten residential flats now lodged with East Lothian Council.

The project is earmarked for land to the rear of High Street and would include parking spaces, bin and recycling facilities, and a sensory garden. The 794-square-metre site is currently being used as a storage yard.

An earlier application for 13 flats on the same land was submitted in 2019 and secured approval from the council in June last year.

The revised plans, put forward by Abacus Groundworks, state that the new proposal “allows for a similar footprint, a reduction in the height of the proposal and a reduced number of flats to allow for the additional requirements of the proposed end users.”

The development would consist mainly of two-bedroom homes, alongside some one-bedroom properties, all designed to support tenants with varying needs.

A sensory garden is included in the design, intended to “allow for appreciation and direct connection and appreciation of nature.” The flats would also feature solar panels, hidden from street view, and two electric vehicle charging points.

In a design, access and sustainability report, the applicant notes: “The proposal has been subject to a detailed design development over several months to arrive at its current form.

“Taking from positive characteristics of the local area and from the unique conditions of the site whilst also adding interest and vitality to the site.

“The development of the site is a golden opportunity and shall be more in keeping with the cosmopolitan nature of the local area, and serve to support the area economically and the existing local provision of service.

“It addresses the climate emergency and has added to the biodiversity of the site. It is therefore hoped that the application shall be supported to a successful conclusion.”
