University of Edinburgh appoints Iain Logan as head of construction

A building development expert with a strong track record in the public and education sector has been appointed as head of construction for the University of Edinburgh

Iain Logan joins the estates department from property and construction consultants Thomson Bethune, where he held the position of associate director.

He has more than 32 years’ experience in the construction industry, with expertise in education, student accommodation, health care and laboratory facilities. He also offers an in-depth knowledge of commercial and contract management.

At Thomson Bethune, Iain worked on a variety of projects for the University including the student halls of residence, O’Shea Halls at Holyrood North, the Centre for Tissue Repair at Edinburgh BioQuarter and the Edinburgh Futures Institute at the site of the former Royal Infirmary.

He also has extensive experience of working with public sector clients, including Fife Council, Scottish Court Services and the City of Edinburgh Council.

The University’s estates department is responsible for developing and maintaining the University’s estate. A significant programme of investment is underway, in both capital development and the maintenance of the infrastructure and resilience of the estate.

This programme of campus improvements will enhance the estate for students, staff and visitors. Strategic acquisitions and implementation of new build and refurbishment projects will provide modern, sustainable and stimulating working and learning environments across the University to help ensure that it remains at the forefront of world-leading research, teaching and learning.

Director of estate development, Jane Johnston, said: “Iain is joining the University at a critical time and we are looking forward to having his expertise contribute to the delivery of the capital plan.

“The head of construction is a new role within the estates department and Iain brings with him a wealth of experience in the construction sector. Having previously worked on several projects for the University, he is already well known to the project teams and is a trusted partner.”
