Wishaw tower demolition marks next stage in regeneration plans
Demolition work is continuing at Allershaw Tower in Wishaw, as transformation across the Gowkthrapple area gathers pace.
The landmark tower previously held 70 homes, which in recent years was designated for residents aged over 60, and is now being taken down as part of the council’s long-term towers strategy. The programme aims to replace all 48 high-rise blocks across the area with modern, energy-efficient homes.
Work on site began in October 2025, with specialist contractor Dem-Master Demolition Limited leading the project. Progress is continuing with all works being carried out using controlled methods and strict measures in place to manage dust, noise and safety.
Once demolition is complete, the site will be prepared for future redevelopment, supporting the next phase of housing investment in the area.
Cameron Barr, housing investment manager at North Lanarkshire Council, said: “Gowkthrapple has already seen significant investment deliver new homes that are reshaping the area into a more modern, welcoming place to live.
“This is about far more than demolition. We’re building safe, energy efficient homes that genuinely meet the needs of our residents, and the progress speaks for itself. New homes are already making a real difference to the community, improving lives, strengthening neighbourhoods and making sure our housing is fit for the future.
“The changing skyline in Wishaw tells its own story. It’s a sign of our long-term commitment to creating better homes and stronger communities for years to come.”
