Work begins on £2.8m Fife community hub

Cowdenbeath Community Centre1Work to refurbish a £2.8 million community hub in Cowdenbeath is now underway.

The Stenhouse Street project involves the refurbishment and extension of a former office building to provide a state of the art community hub facility.

The works are expected to cost £2.892m (£2.592m sourced from Fife Council’s Community Investment Fund + £0.30m Scottish Government grant).

The project has been designed by Fife Council’s Property Services and constructed by Fife Council’s Building Services.

Due to open its doors to the public in June 2017, the refurbished facility will be home to a multi-function community hall, crèche, outdoor play area, lift, youth hub, learning and community kitchens, cafe, bar facilities, learning centre, recording and rehearsal studios, meeting and training rooms, and offices.

Raymond Johnston, Property Services service manager, said: “Over the next two months, the pace of work on site will increase to progress the internal refurbishment and to complete groundworks, below ground surface water and drainage works and foundations to allow the steel frame to be built for the community hall. The steel frame is progressing and is being built by a local subcontractor off site. Within the existing building the new internal partitions are progressing well.”
