Work to refresh Perth city centre underway

A programme of works to refresh Perth city centre is underway.

Repairs to damaged paving slabs outside Perth Museum have now been completed and artificial grass opposite the Museum has been lifted.

These actions are both part of a programme of works designed to breathe new life into the city centre.

The City Centre Improvement Task Force was given £200,000 in this year’s Budget to invest in the city centre.

As well as the replacement of damaged paving slabs, old, weathered benches are being replaced, while streets and vennels will be given deep cleans.

Perth and Kinross Council’s Unpaid Work Team will also be removing stickers and chewing gum from bins and streetlamps across the city centre.

To celebrate Scotland qualifying for the World Cup for the first time in 28 years, bunting will be put up on George Street and St John’s Street from Monday 18 June.

Information posters on the windows of the former Debenhams store are also being replaced.

Perth and Kinross Council leader, Councillor Eric Drysdale, said: “We want residents, businesses and visitors to have the right impression of Perth and these works will make an immediate difference to how the city centre looks and feels.

“There is a lot happening in Perth this summer, from the Bear Trail to the City of Perth Salute and more, and this £200,000 investment will make sure Perth is looking at its best.

“The recent sale of the Lakeland building and our nomination in the 2026 Urbanism Awards shows what great potential there is in Perth and we are working hard to bring in more investment and, by extension, more people into the city centre.”

Economy and infrastructure convener Councillor Grant Laing, added: “Perth is one of Scotland’s most historic cities and we want it looking its best. We know high streets everywhere are facing challenges and it is important we support our businesses where we can. These works will help make the city centre more attractive to visitors and residents alike.”
