Councillors give go-ahead for Bellshill housing transformation

Plans to transform the former Clydesdale Steelworks site in Bellshill into a large new residential neighbourhood have been approved by North Lanarkshire Council, subject to a legal agreement covering contributions to local schools.

The council’s planning committee has supported proposals from Miller Homes and Banks Property to redevelop the 33-hectare brownfield site on Clydesdale Street, which lies south of Lanarkshire Mosque, into a vibrant new community of more than 430 homes.

The development will feature a variety of three to five-bedroom detached, semi-detached and terraced properties, alongside play areas, landscaped open spaces, and extensive planting designed to create a green buffer along the northern and western edges of the site. Two new access roads will be formed from Clydesdale Street and Coronation Road to serve the development.

The project represents a major regeneration of a long-derelict industrial site that has become affected by fly-tipping and anti-social behaviour in recent years. As part of the approved plans, a full remediation of the land will be undertaken before construction begins.

To address local education needs, the council’s education service has specified a developer contribution of nearly £900,000. No statutory consultees objected to the plans, although conditions relating to transport, drainage, landscaping and environmental management have been attached to the permission.

During the consultation, ten members of the public submitted comments, one in support, one neutral and eight objecting, with concerns ranging from traffic and school capacity to air quality and construction access.

Despite these, councillors agreed unanimously to grant consent subject to finalisation of the legal agreement.

Construction work is expected to begin once the legal agreements are in place.
