Cundall bolsters Scottish civils team with new associate director

Duncan Shaw

Multi-disciplinary engineering consultancy Cundall has appointed Duncan Shaw as civils associate director in its Scotland region.

The firm said the appointment reflects its desire to increase its civil engineering offering in the North of Scotland, alongside its already well-established presence in other parts of the country. Duncan’s focus will be on strengthening the practice’s energy service offering, by working closely with the region’s energy clients.

A chartered civil engineer with more than 18 years’ experience in the industry, Duncan was previously employed by Cundall in 2021, and has also worked at Jacobs, WSP and AECOM. He specialises in the technical design delivery of a wide range of civil infrastructure projects, with a focus on sustainably led civil engineering solutions. His expertise is in the masterplanning, residential, schools and colleges, and higher education sectors.

Duncan has recently delivered the utilities design for the Dublin Metrolink scheme, developed sustainable and time-critical designs for Europe’s largest battery manufacturing facility, and worked closely with public sector clients to develop and deliver sustainable designs through SuDs and flood resilience schemes. His strong understanding and expertise of working in the energy sector will facilitate him to drive and deliver energy projects in Scotland.

Commenting on his new role, Duncan said: “It is an exciting time to join Cundall’s civils team. The practice is a leader in sustainable design with sustainability running through all elements of the business. It is especially refreshing to be part of a team that is so passionate about making a difference through their work. This reflects my own passion and expertise, and I look forward to leading the civil engineering team and continuing to set a high technical standard on all our projects.”

John McLoughlin, partner at Cundall, added: “We are excited to have Duncan re-join the civils team. He will be responsible for driving our energy sector in the North of Scotland and has a plethora of experience working with clients across a range of sectors. Duncan’s deep understanding of sustainability within civil engineering will add immense value to the discipline as Cundall works to reach its Zero Carbon Design 2030 commitment. Here’s to making great strides and achieving new heights!”
