The business nominated MacMillan in recognition of his academic success, professional development and dedication to the future of the surveying profession. The judges said that the competition for 2026 was “tougher than ever.”

MacMillan’s journey into surveying started at an early age, when he attained practical construction experience from the age of 14 while working alongside his father, and he acquired a solid interest in the built environment.

At age 15, he got an unconditional offer to study Building Surveying at Glasgow Caledonian University, starting his degree at 16.

Alongside his studies, MacMillan continued to gain practical experience and, at 16, he approached Allied Surveyors Scotland about an opportunity in the profession. 

After staying in contact with the business for two years, he gained a Trainee Building Surveyor role in June 2024. He has since finished his degree with First Class Honours and advanced into his current Graduate Building Surveyor role.

Allied Surveyors Scotland’s director of operations, Kevin Keane, said: “David’s commitment extends beyond his day-to-day role. His final-year dissertation explored the age and gender imbalance within surveying, including research with industry professionals and secondary school pupils.

“He is now putting his findings into action by taking part in a mentoring initiative at his former school, helping young people understand the career opportunities available within the built environment.”

Recently, MacMillan has also been chosen to join the Allied Surveyors Scotland Associate Board, where he is eager to help initiatives concerning colleague engagement, professional development and bringing in more workers into the profession.

At age 20, MacMillan has combined six years of practical construction experience with a degree and a growing professional career, while contributing to the future of the profession. 

The final selection will go ahead at the CIOB Scotland Awards lunch at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel, Glasgow, on 9 October 2026.
