The outstanding achievements of Scotland’s construction professionals have been celebrated at the annual Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) Scotland Awards.

Held at the DoubleTree by Hilton in central Glasgow on Friday 9 October, the awards brought together construction professionals from across Scotland to recognise individuals, teams and projects making a significant contribution to the industry.

Dr Victoria Hills, chief executive of CIOB, said: “The CIOB Scotland Awards are a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the people and teams who are helping to build a stronger, more innovative and sustainable construction industry.

“From graduates and rising stars at the beginning of their careers to experienced professionals and outstanding project teams, this year’s winners have demonstrated the talent, commitment and leadership that Scotland’s construction sector needs.

“Congratulations to all of our winners and highly commended entrants. Their achievements deserve to be celebrated, and I hope they inspire even more people to see the opportunities that a career in construction can offer.”

David McMillan of Allied Surveyors was named Graduate of the Year, while Kevin Urquhart of Barratt/SAMH took home the Extra Mile Award. Kevin used his extensive experience in the construction sector to represent the industry in the development and delivery of an important suicide prevention training initiative.

David was put forward by the business in recognition of his academic achievement, professional development and commitment to the future of the surveying profession.

Nominees were judged on several different criteria including their academic progression and consistency as well as their commitment to personal and professional development, including leadership, industry engagement, and extracurricular activities.

At just 15, David received an unconditional offer to study building surveying at Glasgow Caledonian University beginning his degree when he turned 16 before graduating with a first-class honours degree.

Now 20, he has already gained six years of practical construction experience. He was recently selected to join the Allied Surveyors Scotland Associate Board, where he aims to support initiatives around colleague engagement, professional development and attracting future talent into the profession.

Commenting on picking up the award, David said: “I am thrilled to collect this award and can’t quite believe the judges decided to choose me over and above the other nominees.

There are so many people I would like to thank from my parents to my university tutors and lecturers and, of course, my colleagues at Allied Surveyors Scotland who have all supported and encouraged me.”

Allied Surveyors Scotland’s director of operations, Kevin Keane FRICS, added: “We are all so proud of David to have won this award and it really is testament to the dedication and commitment he has shown in everything he has done.”

David’s success follows last week’s confirmation that Allied Surveyors Scotland has been selected as a finalist in the Supplier of the Year category at the forthcoming Negotiator Awards 2026.

“This nomination reflects the progress we’re making as a business from embracing digital innovation, through our partnership with OS Capture, to investing in the next generation of surveyors through the Allied Academy. We are continually looking for ways to improve how we work, develop our people and deliver an outstanding experience for our clients,” added Kevin.

Alison Hill of SP Energy Networks was recognised as Rising Star, after making an exceptional transition into construction, progressing from trainee site manager to site manager in just six months. Meanwhile, Andy Chan received the Sustainability Award for his University of St Andrews Project.

Team of the Year award winner Muir Group

The Team of the Year award went to the Ardgowan Distillery team from Muir Group. The award recognises the collaboration, commitment and collective achievements of teams working together to deliver outstanding outcomes across the built environment. Ardgowan Distillery embodied all of these qualities throughout its delivery, demanding exceptional teamwork from Day One.

Faced with a complex Austrian-inspired design, an award-winning Kalzip roof incorporating 241 individual radii, specialist client-direct process installations and challenging logistical requirements in a rural environment, the team consistently found innovative solutions to keep the project moving forward.

Their collaborative approach, technical expertise and unwavering commitment to quality enabled the successful delivery of a world-class carbon-neutral distillery that has since received widespread industry recognition and established itself as a new landmark within Scotland’s whisky sector.

While the award was presented to Muir Construction’s project delivery team, it reflects the contribution of the wider project team who shared the journey and attended the awards ceremony, including representatives from Ardgowan Distillery Company Ltd, Hypostyle, Blyth + Blyth and Thomson Bethune.

Alan Muir, managing director of Muir Construction, said: “We are incredibly proud of the Ardgowan Delivery Team and this well-deserved recognition from CIOB Scotland. Ardgowan Distillery was a unique and highly complex project that demanded exceptional teamwork, collaboration and dedication from everyone involved from the outset.”

“While the award recognises our core project delivery team, it also reflects the fantastic support and commitment shown by the wider project team, our client and design partners. Receiving this award together demonstrates what can be achieved when talented people work hard towards a shared vision. The project has become a landmark development for Scotland’s whisky industry, and we are delighted to see the team’s achievements recognised by our peers.”

Winners were selected in recognition of their contribution to the construction industry, with each category highlighting a different aspect of excellence within the sector. The awards also provided an opportunity to recognise the highly commended entrants, whose achievements demonstrated the strength of talent across Scotland’s construction industry.

The CIOB Scotland Awards are an annual celebration of excellence across Scotland’s construction sector, recognising the achievements of both CIOB members and non-members.
