How did you get started in the industry?

I started as an apprentice aged 16 in the family business, run by my late father Sinclair.

Biggest professional achievement:

Continuing the family business into the 4th generation with my two sons and becoming President of SELECT.

Best advice you received:

“Look after the business and the business will look after you.”

What do you like most about your job?

Training apprentices to become the electricians of tomorrow is very rewarding. I also enjoy meeting people and the fact that every day provides a new challenge.

And the least?

As a registered electrician, it is becoming increasingly frustrating to attend jobs where electrical work has not been carried out competently. Poor workmanship not only creates unnecessary faults and additional costs for customers but also raises serious safety concerns.

Too often, I am called to rectify installations that fail to meet the required standards, highlighting the importance of using qualified, competent professionals to carry out electrical work correctly the first time.

What would you most like to change in housing/construction?

I would like to see greater support from the Scottish Government for apprentice funding. And following on from my comments above, regulation of electricians is essential to ensure that electrical work is only carried out by suitably qualified professionals.

I wouldn’t – it’s great as it is.
