New-look Saltire Civil Engineering Awards launched

The search is on for Scotland’s top engineering and construction projects with the launch of the new-look Saltire Civil Engineering Awards for 2017.

All professions working in the built environment are invited to nominate projects or project phases located in Scotland and substantially completed in 2016/17.

The closing date for submissions will be 4pm on Friday 12th May, 2017.

The Saltire Civil Engineering Awards celebrate outstanding civil engineering achievement, innovation and ingenuity in Scotland and have grown into the highest honour for engineering excellence in the built environment.

Commenting on the launch of this year’s awards, Convenor of the judging panel Ainslie McLaughlin, said: “The Saltire Civil Engineering Awards represent a unique opportunity to recognise civil engineering at its best across Scotland and celebrate the achievements of the industry. The history and prestige of these awards always attract entrants of the highest standard and I very much look forward to assessing this year’s submissions.”

Previous winners of our awards include The Helix urban park, M74 Completion Project, Forth Road Bridge repair and Pulpit Rock. Last year’s winner of the Greatest Contribution to Scotland category – The Forth Road Bridge – went on to win the ICE People’s Choice Award for the UK’s favourite civil engineering project of the year.

One of the key aims of the Saltire Civil Engineering Awards is to increase public awareness of the crucially important contribution civil engineering makes to the Scottish economy and society and an expert panel of judges assess nominations across three award categories - Greatest Contribution to Scotland; Infrastructure Award; and Special Awards, the latter including the Building Award, Engineered in Scotland Award, and the Environmental Award.

As well as technical achievement, projects in each category will be assessed based on their contribution to the sustainable creation, improvement and nurturing of the physical and social environment.

A senior Scottish Government Minister will join the Presidents of the Institution of Civil Engineers and Saltire Society and an audience of over 150 senior figures from Scotland’s construction and built environment industries at the awards ceremony in Edinburgh’ National Museum of Scotland on Tuesday 24 October 2017.
