Permanent stone arena proposed for Edinburgh Castle

Permanent stone arena proposed for Edinburgh Castle

An Edinburgh-based product manager has proposed that a permanent stone arena should be constructed for Edinburgh Castle, an idea which has caught the eye of local politicians and architects.

Each year, many people gather to watch the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo on metal seating above the Castle Esplanade, reports The Herald.

This means that construction crews build the stadium in May for use in July and August only for it to be taken down by October.

But product manager Kal Turnbull has proposed the addition of a stone arena.

Turnbull said: “You have the trucks and the cranes bringing in many tonnes of steel – that’s causing air pollution while the construction itself is bringing noise pollution. And, of course, the thing is just ugly, so it brings visual pollution.”

Turnball added: “Do we just accept this temporary structure that, you know, has half a year of impact every year forever?

“Or do we try and do something that embraces it in a way that has year-round benefits?”

A meeting with Benjamin Tindall at the Cockburn Association offices prompted the architect to back the campaign, drawing up plans for a permanent stone amphitheatre.

Tindall’s firm posted on LinkedIn, explaining its drawings.

It said: “It … preserves views of the esplanade with all its memorials and monuments, as well as the views of the castle and of the city.

“A key element would be maintaining pedestrian and vehicle access at all times. The underlying stone is likely to be the fairly soft pinkish stone that much of the Old Town was built with.

“This stone was, of course, protected from glacier erosion in the ice ages by the very much harder castle rock.”

Turnbull is hoping to meet with Historic Environment Scotland, which manages the site.
