QTS Group accelerates fleet decarbonisation

Rail infrastructure contractor QTS Group has made significant progress in the decarbonisation and modernisation of its fleet.
Updates include introducing new electric vehicles, enhanced telematics, and advanced AI-driven safety systems. These form part of its commitment to reducing carbon emissions and improving road risk management across rail projects nationwide.
The company has acquired ten new Volkswagen ID.Buzz electric vehicles, which have been deployed immediately following completion of livery work. The firm previously replaced 10 high emission 4x4 models with hybrid vehicles last year.
It marks a major step towards QTS’s target of operating 45 electric vehicles by October, a milestone expected to deliver a further eight per cent reduction in carbon emissions this year.
QTS has implemented a strategic programme to reduce the size and fuel consumption of its fleet, analysing every vehicle request to identify opportunities to introduce smaller, more efficient alternatives. This has reduced fleet size by more than 12%, contributing to lower carbon dioxide output and operational cost savings.
According to the group’s most recent data, QTS surpassed its carbon reduction target, achieving an 18% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions against a goal of 6%.
The company continues to trial and adopt alternative energy sources, including HVO fuels for plant machinery, and is working closely with manufacturers to identify electric vehicles capable of meeting its demanding operational needs.
QTS has also fitted its permanent fleet with Samsara dual-facing camera systems to enhance driving safety. The sophisticated system enables real time monitoring of driving behaviours, fatigue, and road risks.
The telematics platform analyses trends across the fleet, identifying high risk behaviours, supporting targeted training, and feeding data directly to insurers to enhance risk management.
Through the integration of Samsara data, the fleet team can identify vehicles suitable for electric vehicle replacement based on real world usage patterns, driving further decarbonisation across both road and rail operations.
Building on this, QTS has plans to introduce AI-powered driver coaching in 2026, providing personalised feedback via a fully customised QTS digital avatar. The system allows drivers to complete training remotely while automatically tracking uptake and post-training performance improvements.
Aidan Jenkins, fleet manager at QTS, said: “This year has been transformative for the QTS fleet. The expansion of our electric vehicle programme, combined with cutting-edge AI safety technology, is delivering real operational, environmental, and safety benefits.
“Last year also saw our fleet team expand to 6 employees, with new roles created in telematics, data analysis, and safety integration to support our decarbonisation efforts. We are proud to be ahead of our targets and leading from the front within our industry.”
QTS is working closely with its parent organisation, Renew Holdings, to align with group-wide environmental strategies. The company has been recognised internally as a leader in fleet transformation, outperforming other group businesses in the adoption of sustainable technologies and practices.
