Story Contracting lays out succession plan

Story Contracting has appointed its next vice chair and CEO as part of the succession planning for the 35-year-old business.

Jason Butterworth has been appointed as vice chair of Story Contracting from April 1st 2023 and Andy Joy, Story England managing director, will take over as CEO. Mr Joy was recruited to the business with this succession plan in mind, and joined Story last year following a successful career at Amey, responsible for its £400 million rail business.

Mr Butterworth will continue to work closely with all existing clients as well as working closely with the board on future investment, diversification plans and strategic direction.

A spokesperson said: “Story Contracting has gone from strength to strength over the last few years growing from a £70m in 2016 to a £200m business under the six-year leadership of chief executive Jason Butterworth.

“This growth looks set to continue as we look forward to the opportunities CP7 & CP8 will bring for our rail divisions, increasing our work bank with existing and new clients in our Construction and Plant businesses, and looking forward to exciting new opportunities including Joint Ventures and supporting new sectors with our diversification plans.”

Chairman Fred Story added: “This is a really exciting time for the business, and as we celebrate our 35th anniversary, I am delighted that Jason has agreed to take on this role to support the board with investment decisions, the diversification strategy, our major frameworks, and helping me to ensure we achieve sustainable growth across the regions.”
