And finally… Leaders swap boardroom for building site
Persimmon directors alongside apprentices at the Stewarts Loan development in Dundee
Senior leaders at Persimmon Homes North Scotland stepped away from the boardroom and onto the building site as they spent the day alongside apprentices in Dundee, shining a spotlight on the next generation of construction professionals.
Directors from the business joined apprentices at the company’s Stewart’s Loan development, where Persimmon is transforming the former Stewart’s Cream of the Barley factory into a new community of high-quality, energy-efficient homes. The initiative formed part of the company’s ongoing commitment to developing skills, supporting apprenticeships, and ensuring young people play an active role in shaping the future of the business.
The day began on site, with senior management working side-by-side with apprentices throughout the morning, gaining first-hand insight into daily construction activity and the challenges faced by trainees as they build their careers in the industry. Apprentices then led inspections of newly completed homes, demonstrating the technical knowledge and standards they have developed through their training.
The programme continued away from site at Tannadice Park, home of Dundee United FC, where apprentices took part in a team talk delivered by Managing Director James MacKay. Following lunch with the leadership team, apprentices were given the opportunity to ask questions directly to directors about career progression, industry challenges, and the future of housebuilding.

In a role reversal designed to encourage open conversation, the apprentices then took to the floor themselves — answering questions from directors and sharing honest feedback on how the business can improve, from training opportunities and site processes to workplace culture and innovation.
Kevin Rees, operations director of Persimmon Homes North Scotland, said: “Our apprentices are the future of this industry, so it’s vital we listen to them as much as we lead them. Spending the day together — on site and away from it — gives us invaluable insight into their experiences and ideas.
“Construction offers incredible career opportunities, and initiatives like this help ensure we continue creating an environment where young people can learn, progress, and thrive. The energy, professionalism, and ambition shown by our apprentices today was outstanding.”
Nicky McCool, apprentice joiner, added: “It was great to spend the day with the directors and show them what life on site is really like. Having the chance to ask questions and share our views made us feel listened to, and it’s encouraging to know the company genuinely wants to hear from apprentices and help us develop our careers.”
